October, 2009. I saw the enrollment of NTHU international volunteers and the week's exhibition of international volunteers. Let me think, university life should be included more colorfully and be brave to try and challenge things that have never been in contact. And do some experience that I’ll never forget. So, I decide to challenge myself. Try to go to the strange environment, different culture in depth. I came to Indonesia.

At the moment I set my foot on land in Indonesia, my feeling is: wow! Finally arrive at here! Begin from the training camp of the two days and one night in December 2009, we members met each other. After preparation of half a year, in all the hard work we made. Therefore, we could do our project smoothly. I really appreciate people who sponsor us.

To the unfamiliar environment, we must first meet the food and transportation. It is really difficult to accept the food extremely spicy, full of oil, heavy salt, and much of sugar, especially breakfast is same as lunch and dinner. However, when in Rome, I quickly accept the taste here. The transportation is different from Taiwan. We take the customized motorcycle as a taxi, it can take three people. And take a truck with roof called as labi-labi as a bus. It all can smell “fresh” street air.

A month passed very fast. Four University Syiah Kuala students cooperated this month with us. From the strange to the familiar, different cultural background is just able to get along, communicate with each other. We couldn’t receive the accents each other at the beginning, so we often used body language. But more get along the more understand what each other want to express. The more conservative Islam culture encounter with the more open Taiwan culture, I found out they can be open as well. No longer have the stereotype of past, such like terrorists attack or jihad.
During the process of serving, there were junior and senior high school teachers, high school students and university students. We were very glad when we shared information in the class, most people could pay attention, especially the teachers. In the workshop of Sabang, early in the morning to the computer lab, I found that some teachers are early to practice GIMP graphics software that I taught yesterday, and looked over all the steps that they noted on their handout. They smiled to me when I saw them. Touch in that moment was such magnificent. I think between us there is the language barrier though, but it can exchange information and feelings with each other.

After three workshops, I think the information and the course that we bring are only a bridge. No matter Unsyiah students cooperated with us one month, Takengon UGP students cooperated with us two weeks, and the participant of the workshop, regardless of whether everybody absorbed the information. We went to there and affected them more or less. Accordingly, let them think why we foreigners bring the information, whether they can do by themselves. Hope that we could impact their life, so that they could see the world.

I deeply appreciate that I have the opportunity to share the GIMP course, to host the meeting with our members and Indonesian, to consult and chat with our members or Indonesian, and have a speech at closing ceremony of workshops. I’ve never experienced all these things. However, I don’t know how many things they receive from us, but I know that I acquire lots of experience.
