5 by Miho

The one month of volunteer activities has finished. After backing Taiwan, it's already August. For this one month, I pondered deeply over this month, about what I eared or what I paid, also what they got exactly? I think this is a very important issue, otherwise it will be nothing of this month.

IT volunteer is less touching than medical volunteer or volunteer from the disaster area. Maybe some people would be cruised about why you going the volunteer job in foreign country not in your own country. Or some would think that the place which volunteers visit must be poor or needy. However, why you can say that a country is poor or not? From the money valuation? Or from the GDP? In this month, I found that the structures in Indonesia are not like Taiwan, maybe some can live in the cottage home, but most of the Indonesia people are live in the house which is constructed by using the woods. You can hear the noise which is made by your steps when you step on to the stairs. That would make you feel afraid that the stairs would fall down int the same time. The other example is that the clothes they wear may not so fashionable or expensive. However, I think this is not a sufficient reason to convince people that it’s a poor country. In my opinion, Indonesia is a rich country. Why I could say that? That is, their religion. People who devoted himself or herself to their religion could be a symbol of rich of spirit for me. When I was doing the volunteer program with Unsyiah students, they have to leave because of praying sometimes. Because all of us stayed together all day long, and it’s easy to observe that their religion is meaning significant for them, which also makes them full of substance. When we were talking about our own country’s culture, one of the Unsyiah students said that there’s miracle when the tsunami happened. All the mosques weren’t destroyed by the tsunami. When the floor came to the mosque, the flood just spilt that the mosques are still the same. The Unsyiah student said that believe or not, it’s the miracle of their religion. We felt really surprised about that. Maybe it’s because that I don’t own strong belief of my religion, that’s why I feel that they are crazy for their religion. And it’s also the reason which makes me feel that Indonesia is a rich country not a poor country.

Why I choose to go to a rich to do the IT volunteer job? At the first I signed in to this group, it’s just on an impulse. I think if I didn’t go to experience this now, maybe someday in the future I would be regret that I didn’t decide to go. If I didn’t carry out this passion, it’s might just become nothing. Actually I am not belong to the department of IT or something like that, and not so familiar with IT. About free software, I only got fundamental understanding at first. However, I started to realize the merits of the ubuntu operating system. The template is also very awesome. On the other hand, the free software it’s the most attractive point. And its function is not bad if you compare it with the windows operating system. Also you don’t need to pay any copyright fees for using the free software, some functions are better than windows. No worry for any software would be expired. In Sabang, all the members who attended our class is the senior high school teacher. They all concentrated on the class. They asked question as long as they felt confused. They also asked us to give them the related software. It’s not a easy thing that to learn those knowledge of the computer for them. However, their altitude of learning is really impressed me. I hope this program could be a seed of free software. People start to use free software. Then all the members can affect other; more and more people start to use this. The other benefit is that we can lower the amount of using illegal copy software. You can see that there’s a lot of people’s computer is not using genuine software if you go there. To solve this problem, you may buy the genuine software. But it costs a lot for the local people. That’s why we promote the free software.

In this one month journey, from the first workshop in Sabang then the two workshops in Takengon which one was for senior high school teacher, the other one was for senior high school students. We visited the coffee farmer’s place to do a interview. I’ve eaten the Indonesia food for one month, it seems the level of spicy I can put up with has already leveled up. The weather in Indonesia was so hot, but I had to wear long shirts, long jeans to experience the life there. I enjoyed the one month life there, ate rice by hand, took the cold water shower; spoke the bahasa Indonesia which is not influent. I met so many people there, took the local transportation, etc. those are very rare memories for me, also very rare experience for me. I could have this kind of experience, I felt really appreciated. We E-mate can’t execute this program without so many people, NTHU and some company’s help. I also hope that all of our E-mate members could be the one who transit the spirit of free software, makes life better with information technology.
